Valve has added a rule to its onboarding process for new games on Steam and that’s bad news for crypto and NFT fans – cryptocurrency games are effectively no longer allowed on Steam.
The implementation of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency is more and more common in the gaming world. Whether you want to play classic Atari games or collect adorable virtual animals, there is probably something that you are interested in using blockchain.
As you might expect, some games using cryptocurrency and blockchain have infiltrated Steam over the past couple of years. Everything is about to change thanks to a new rule implemented by Valve earlier today.
The future of cryptocurrency games already on Steam is uncertain
A new Steam integration rule has effectively banned the addition of new cryptocurrency games to Steam – a blow to game developers who are experimenting with this relatively young technology.
What you shouldn’t post on Steam:
13. Applications based on blockchain technology that issue or enable the exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs.
The pending rule change was reported by the developer of Age of rust, a first-person adventure game that allows players to solve puzzles and collect NFTs.
“Community: A few minutes ago, we were informed that @Steam will be removing * all blockchain games * from the platform, including Age of Rust, because NFTs are valuable. Behind the scenes we had good communication and have been frank with Steam “, read a Twitter thread of The age of rust developer.
“We chose to be frank about blockchain games and NFTs. As a result, we ultimately lost the battle with Steam. While I am disappointed with the removal of Age of Rust, the fact is more than Blockchain games. inasmuch as [a] the whole will be deleted. It is [a] setback for all. “
There is a minor benefit to this rule change: only games based on cryptocurrency and NFT are prohibited. Blockchain technology is still very much allowed on Steam.
The changes to the integration rules effectively mean that any new cryptocurrency game will not be approved by Valve for release on Steam. It is not known what will happen to existing games using cryptocurrency; We have contacted Valve for comment and will update this article when we receive a response.
